Mangyang-ro Sanbok-doro: A Local Native’s Guide to Busan’s Best-Kept Panoramic View

When planning a trip to Korea, many travelers search for "hidden gems"—places where you can escape the massive crowds and experience the authentic rhythm of local life. As a 30-year native of Busan and a writer who seeks stories in every corner of this city, I want to introduce you to a place that even many Koreans haven't fully discovered: Mangyang-ro Sanbok-doro.

Mangyang-ro Mountainside Road, a warm spring landscape

The Soul of Busan: What is "Sanbok-doro"?

Busan's history is deeply intertwined with the Korean War. As a city of refugees, people built their homes wherever they could, stacking houses like terraces up the steep mountainsides. To connect these neighborhoods, roads were carved into the middle of the mountains. We call these "Sanbok-doro" (Mountain-side Roads).

Walking along these roads is like walking through a living museum. Depending on the time of day and the season, the scenery changes completely. It is the perfect place to grab a cup of coffee, walk at your own pace, and look down at the city's complex beauty.

The Recommended Route: Mangyang-ro 175 to 419

Mangyang-ro is a very long road, so it’s important to know the right sections to explore. I personally recommend the stretch from Mangyang-ro 175beon-gil to Mangyang-ro 419beon-gil.

Mangyang-ro

  • Spring Magic: In the spring, this road is framed by a magnificent tunnel of cherry blossoms. It’s a sight you won't find anywhere else in the world—pink petals floating with the blue ocean as a backdrop.

  • The View: From here, you can see everything that defines Busan: the bustling downtown, the traditional "Ibagu-gil" (Story Road), and the vast sea merging with the mountains.

360-Degree Panorama: Chunghontap (Memorial Tower)

In the heart of this route lies Democracy Park, home to the Chunghontap Memorial Tower. This tower honors those who sacrificed their lives to protect freedom and democracy.

For locals, this is a place of memory; most Busan students visit here on school field trips. If you happen to meet local students here, it’s a great opportunity for a friendly cultural exchange!

  • The Viewpoint: The top of the tower offers a 360-degree panoramic view of Busan. It is so breathtaking that even a high-end DSLR camera can’t fully capture the scale of it. You’ll see the city’s skyscrapers and humble houses coexisting in a way that is uniquely Busan.

How to Get There (Local Insider Tip)

The best part? This incredible view is just a short bus ride from Busan Station.

  1. Exit Busan Station and find the bus stop directly in front.

  2. Board Bus No. 190 or Bus No. 70.

  3. These buses will take you directly to Democracy Park (Minju Park), the highest point in the area.

I suggest starting your journey at the memorial tower and then slowly walking down the Mangyang-ro path to soak in the atmosphere.

Since I am a local living in Korea, I first wrote this story in my native Korean and then translated it to share with you. I hope you’ll understand if some of the phrasing feels a little unique or different from standard English. Happy traveling!
