Yeongdo Huinnyeoul Culture Village: A Cinematic Local Guide Near Busan Station

Beyond Haeundae: Why Your Busan Journey Should Begin at Yeongdo White Wave Village

Upon arriving at Busan Station, the natural instinct for most tourists is to hop on a bus or taxi straight to Haeundae. However, even with dedicated bus lanes, the traffic toward the beaches can be notoriously heavy. While the subway is a reliable alternative, there is an even better option—one that lies just 10 to 15 minutes away in the exact opposite direction.

Welcome to Yeongdo, and specifically, the enchanting Huinnyeoul Culture Village (also known as the White Wave Village).

The Cinematic Soul of Busan: "The Attorney"

Huinnyeoul Village gained international fame as the filming location for the critically acclaimed Korean film, The Attorney. The movie stars Song Kang-ho, the world-renowned actor famous for his role as the father in the Oscar-winning film Parasite.

The village's narrow alleys and humble houses perched on cliffs served as a poignant backdrop for the film. Today, it has transformed into a cultural landmark where the nostalgic charm of old Busan meets modern artistic energy.

Cliffs, Cafes, and the Perfect Social Media Shot

The true charm of this village lies in its geography. Houses and vibrant cafes are built directly into the mountainside, overlooking the vast blue sea.

  • The Walking Paths: Strolling along the seaside trails offers a "feast for the eyes" at every turn.

  • Photo Spots: You will often see queues of international tourists, from both the West and Japan, waiting to take photos at specific alleyways. The contrast between the weathered stairs and the infinite horizon of the sea makes for a perfect Instagram moment.

Most buildings here are beautifully remodeled aging structures, specifically designed to offer visitors a unique "cliffside cafe" experience.

The Haenyeo Village: A Chef’s Honest Perspective

Further along the coast, you will find the Haenyeo Village. Here, you can experience something truly novel: eating fresh seafood caught directly from the ocean by Haenyeo (Korean female divers).

However, speaking as a local and a chef, I must offer some practical advice:

  • Infrastructure: This is a historic, older area, so the facilities are quite rustic and lack modern convenience.

  • Value: While the experience of eating seaside is unforgettable, the price-to-portion ratio might not be satisfying if you are looking for a full meal. Think of it as a "cultural experience" rather than a hearty dinner.

Logistics: Navigating the Island of Yeongdo

Yeongdo is an island with narrow roads and a unique terrain. To make the most of your visit, keep these tips in mind:

  1. Public Transit is Key: Taxis often struggle with the narrow, congested roads of Yeongdo. Using public transportation or walking the coastal paths is often more efficient.

  2. Combine with Taejongdae: If you have more time, head deeper into the island to Taejongdae, where lush forests meet breathtaking rocky cliffs.

  3. Budget Your Time: Because Yeongdo is an island at the southern tip of the city, you must budget your time wisely. Returning to the "Right Side" (Haeundae) can take up to two hours during peak times.

Plan Your "Left Side" Journey Strategically

As I recommended in my previous post, the best way to see Busan is to divide your trip into the Left and Right sides of Busan Station. By starting your day in Yeongdo, you experience the authentic, soulful side of Busan before moving toward the modern skyscrapers of the east.

Coincidentally, there is another fascinating spot near Yeongdo that many travelers are curious about. I’ll share more about that in my next story.
